Welcome to the Well Soul Podcast, where we pause to drink in Scripture, reflect and pray. I am your host, Seana Scott, and sometimes life leaves our souls feeling parched, so come to the well of living water that never runs dry.
In today's episode, we continue our pause moving through the story of the Gospel as we meditate on one of King Solomon's writings. This is your first time listening, I encourage you to start at the beginning of the story of the gospel episodes.
Today we are going to summarize the story of the Gospel and meditate on one of King Solomon's writings. But all of these writings are useful and profitable for knowing and worshiping God.
So, God created the world, good. And humanity, very good. But sin shattered the very good and brought death. Now all deserve forever death because we all sin, Romans 3:23. But we have seen through the story of the Gospel that God has a master plan to rescue humanity through the promise he proclaimed in the garden. That one day, a descendant of woman would crush the serpent’s head.
This gospel story is weaved through God's promise to Abraham that through him all the earth would be blessed and further revealed in God's promise to David that one of his descendants would have a forever throne in a forever kingdom. Last week we meditated on the character of King Solomon, David's son, the wisest man, who lacked to follow the most important wisdom—obeying God.
It was similar to the sin of his father David, who disobeyed God by taking Bathsheba, coveting and killing for another man's wife. It was also similar to the sin of King Saul. who disobeyed God by not destroying the Amalekites like God told him to.
It seems no matter what, humans, even God's kings, choose their sin rather than following God all the way. It seems maybe we all need grace, from kings to commoners. And it is in this place we will meditate on one of Solomon's writings to his son that speaks of the importance of godly wisdom.
Before I read, take a deep breath and prepare your heart to listen to God's word.
Come, Holy Spirit, come. This proverb was written from a father to his son, but its wisdom is for all of us.
Proverbs 3:1–18
My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.[a]
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.
9 Honor the Lord with your wealth,
with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and your vats will brim over with new wine.
11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline,
and do not resent his rebuke,
12 because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in.[b]
13 Blessed are those who find wisdom,
those who gain understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her;
those who hold her fast will be blessed.
What did the Holy Spirit highlight for you from this passage? Dwell with this for a minute.
Wisdom is more precious than gold or rubies, but let us remember Solomon had immense wisdom, and yet lacked one thing: obedience to the wisdom of God.
So I ask, what wisdom of God might the Spirit be prodding you to follow, and not just know in your head? Meditate and pray about this for the next few moments, or anything else the Spirit brings to mind.
Let's pray. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, one and only true God, we worship You. Thank You, Lord, for Your Word, which is full of wisdom about who You are, and who we are, and Your story, and how to worship You, and have a relationship with You, and all that is to come. Help us, Lord, to hunger after your Word, to be disciplined in reading your Word, and to be diligent in doing your Word.
Oh, Lord, we love You. Help us to follow You by Your power and Spirit. In Jesus's name, amen.
