Ep. 59 | DAVID | Story of the Gospel | God's Promise of a Forever King
Show Notes Transcript

God is faithful even when we are not. Even King David, the man after God's won heart, sinned in a big way (stealing another man's wife and having that man killed as a cover-up!) But even still, God chose David and made an irrevocable promise to him. This is what we mediate on in today's episode because this promise will lead us directly to Christ.

Welcome to the Well Soul Podcast, where we pause to drink in Scripture, reflect and pray. I am your host, Seana Scott, and sometimes life leaves our souls feeling parched, so come to the well of living water that never runs dry.

In today's episode, we will continue the story of the Gospel as we meditate on God's promise to King David. If it is your first time listening, I encourage you to start at the beginning of the Story of the Gospel episodes on the podcast.

So far in the Story of the Gospel, we meditated on creation, humanity's sin, and God's promise—and God declaring a promise in the middle of the mess in Genesis 3, that one day someone from the line of the woman would crush the serpent's head. We saw in the stories of Noah and the Tower of Babel that when given the chance, humanity sins, and we saw God's redemptive plan start to unfold when he made an unconditional promise to Abraham for land, descendants, and through him, all the nations of the earth would be blessed.

Then we dwelled on God's faithfulness to deliver Israel, Abraham's descendants through Isaac, from slavery in Egypt and Tamar's righteousness to continue the line of Judah, the line of the Messiah, even an unconventional ways.

And we meditated on God giving Israel the law through Moses and Israel's sin for not trusting God when they came to the edge of the promised land. So, they wandered the wilderness for another 40 years.

And then we meditated on God, reiterating the importance of following Him as Israel entered the promised land, and then we meditated on the cycle of Israel's sin and the rescue in the book of Judges.

And last week we saw the story of God's faithfulness to do his work with faith filled people like Ruth, the mother of Obed. who was the father of Jesse, who was the father of King David.

So today we meditate on God's promise to King David, called the Davidic Covenant.

Now David's ascent to the throne was full of a wild political struggle that had him hiding in caves for the sake of his life. (Who said God's plans are always easy is making up nursery rhymes).

But eventually, David was placed in the throne in the city of Jerusalem, and he looked out from his palace to the dusty tabernacle where God's presence dwelled in a tent and where sacrifices were offered. And he wondered to himself (I'm paraphrasing), “How is it that I live in luxury in a palace while God's presence dwells in a tent?”

So, he wanted to make a temple for the Lord, a house, the Hebrew word “buyit.”

This is where we will pause for our Scripture meditation today.

Before I read, take a deep breath and pray for the Holy Spirit to speak to you through God's word.

Come, Holy Spirit, come.

2 Samuel 7:8–16

8 “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a] over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.

“‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne will be established forever.’”

What did the Holy Spirit highlight for you as you listened? Dwell with us for a moment.

Throughout the story of the Gospel, we have seen when humans try to make a name for themselves, they get into all kinds of sin mess, but here God is telling David, “I will make your name great.”

God promises David a house, a seed, and a kingdom, but the seed is a forever king and the kingdom is forever. This is where we begin to see God's promise to Abraham further fulfilled, that through Abraham the whole world would be blessed—through David an eternal king will come that will bless the world.

Now you can see the show note links for more information about this passage, but for now, take a moment to reflect and pray. Sit silently for 30 seconds, dwelling on God's faithfulness to Abraham, to David, and through their descendants all the way to Jesus Christ.

God is faithful.

Dwell on this, pray about it, or anything else the Spirit brings to mind.

Let's pray.
