Show Notes Transcript

For hundreds of years, God's people waited for the Messiah to reveal himself. When would He come?

Then Jesus came. And many did not recognize him.

Sometimes we forget to recognize him too.

This week we are meditating on a passage from the book of Colossians that focuses our souls on who Jesus is—as we continue in a heart of worship after Easter Sunday.

Welcome to our series in the book of Colossians.

Welcome to the Well Soul Podcast, where we pause to drink and scripture, reflect and pray. I am your host, Seana Scott, and sometimes life leaves our souls feeling parched, so come to the well of living water that never runs dry.

Jesus is alive!

Happy day after Resurrection Sunday.

We begin a new series today focusing on passages in the book of Colossians, where we will see the glory and supremacy of Christ, as well as encouragement for how to live this Christian life. It is my hope through meditating on passages in Colossians, that we will continue in a heart of worship and gratitude for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Welcome to the book of Colossians.

The book of Colossians was written by Paul when he was in prison to a church he never visited, but only heard about through the faithful ministry of Epaphras. It seems from the text that Paul was correcting misguided teaching and church practice in regard to angel worship, false philosophy and distracting religious practices.

He did so by highlighting the supremacy of Christ in all things.

Just as Paul encouraged the Colossians, it's important in our lives to focus our devotion and worship on who God really is: Father, Son, and Spirit, three in one, and the supremacy of Christ over all things. Rather than focusing on the philosophy of our age, that seems to focus on the supremacy of ourselves.

Our truth, our purpose, our destiny and prosperity. Our popular religious culture turns our focus away from Christ and onto ourselves, which is just as dangerous as angel worship and the false teaching in Colossi.

We meditate on the first passage in this series that focuses our hearts on who Jesus Christ is. Before I read, take a deep breath and set aside all that is on your mind and heart. Put it all in God's hands and be present with the spirit to hear God's word.

Come Holy Spirit, come wash us in your word.

Colossians 1:15–23.

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of[a] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.

What did you hear as you listened. Meditate on this for a moment.

Christ is the beginning and first born among the dead. All things were created through him (see John 1 and Genesis 1), but he is also the first born among the dead because He died, took on the punishment of forever death for all humanity because of our sin, and then was risen from the dead by the power of His Holy Spiri—this is what we can rejoice about his resurrection.

I'm going to read the passage one more time. Quiet at your mind. And listen with your Spirit to God's Word.

Take a moment to focus your being on what you just heard. What is one truth about Jesus from this passage that you will carry with you?

Now take some time to pray. Worship Jesus for who he is or pray about whatever. The spirit brings to mind.

Let's pray.

Father, Son, Holy Spirit one and only true God, we worship You. Thank you for dying on the cross for our sins. You are above all things. Help us, oh Lord, to fix our minds on you. Highly exalted, risen savior and Lord, we love you Lord, and we worship you
